From March 2014 on-wards some of the faculty and I began planting work with the children
- different home rooms planted seeds in small individual pots which they then cared for in
their classrooms. Children planted peas, pumpkins, winter and summer squashes, green
beans, cucumbers, sunflowers and carrots from seed and as they began to germinate I
potted them on into bigger pots etc. before planting them out into the garden directly.
Children also scattered wildflower seeds over one entire bed of the new garden. Small
tomato plants, aubergine, pepper and chile plants were donated by parents.
Another parent built beautiful wigwam plant supports with wood collected from the wooded area at
the back of the school. As the end of the summer semester approached, families gathered
to mark the official opening of the CDS Learning Garden. There was a tangible buzz
amongst the school community about the forthcoming crops - in particular the sunflower
competition in which every class entered their own seedling in a bid to see whose would
be tallest.
